CFTally: Frequently Asked Questions > CrossFit Programming > Is CrossFit a "one-size fits all" approach?
Well, kinda.
CrossFit is what is generally called a General Fitness Preparation (GPP) program. This is in contrast to a Specific Fitness Preparation (SPP) program. A GPP program helps you to build a foundation of strength, agility and all the other attributes that are necessary for a successful SPP program. Examples of an SPP program is training for a particular sport, whether it be a triathlon, marathon or flag football. Whenever you specialize you are venturing into SPP territory.
At CFTally we think everyone ought to work on the kind of broad inclusive fitness good CrossFit programming provides before beginning to specialize. Concentrating on a specific activity without a good base of fitness is one reason so many people get injured.
Does that mean we don't encourage you to do other sports, not at all. Learning and doing sports are great fun and is part of the CrossFit prescription.
As Coach Glassman says, "It should be fairly clear that the fitness that CrossFit advocates and develops is deliberately broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist." CJF, What is Fitness?
